My grandfather on my mother's side died when I was quite young. He used to take my brother and I camping in his RV; I remember his parakeet, Spike, in his cage on the dashboard, the taste of bacon and syrup, the smell of his cigarrettes. I was given his camera, and used it for years and years. All of these photographs are created using a technique called double-exposure. I took pictures, then wound back the film and took pictures again. It creates a surreal, layered image that is almost entirely unplanned. These pictures were all taken in San Francisco.
